GPA, WAM and selection rank: which is which?

University results come in a few forms. A GPA is a grade point average on a 7-point scale. A WAM is your mark average, weighted by subject size. A selection rank is your ATAR plus any bonus points, and it is what gets you into a course in the first place.

Different universities lead with different numbers. UNSW and Sydney lean on the WAM. Others quote a GPA. Some grade bands also differ: a High Distinction is 85 at UNSW but 80 at Monash. So the same marks can read differently from one campus to the next.

Pick the tool that matches your need from the list above. The GPA and WAM calculators cover most students. For entry, the selection rank calculator adds bonus points to your ATAR.

Course cut-offs change each year, so confirm current requirements with the admissions centre — most NSW and ACT courses are listed through UAC.

FAQ

Common questions

What university calculators are on this page?

This page has several tools. You can work out your GPA and your WAM. You can use scales for UNSW, USYD, Monash and Melbourne. You can also turn your ATAR into a selection rank. And you can add bonus points.

What’s the difference between GPA and WAM?

A GPA is a grade-point average on a set scale, often 7 points. A WAM is your weighted average mark, as a percentage. WAM uses your actual marks. GPA turns marks into grade points first.

Do all Australian universities use the same grade scale?

No. Most use a 7-point GPA. But the mark bands differ. For example, Monash gives a High Distinction from 80%. Melbourne uses H1 and H2 grades. So check your own university’s scale.

What’s the difference between an ATAR and a selection rank?

Your ATAR is your rank against other Year 12 students. Your selection rank is your ATAR plus bonus points. Universities use the selection rank to offer places. So it is usually higher than your ATAR.

What is the difference between GPA and WAM?

A GPA averages grade points on a 7-point scale. A WAM averages your actual marks, weighted by subject size. A WAM keeps more detail, and many universities prefer it.

Do all Australian universities use the same GPA scale?

Most use a 7-point scale, but grade bands differ. A High Distinction is 85 at UNSW and 80 at Monash. Always read the scale before comparing two GPAs.

What is a selection rank?

It is your ATAR plus any bonus points, such as subject or equity adjustments. Universities select on this rank, not your raw ATAR. It is capped at 99.95.
