Monash University uses a 7.0 GPA scale, but with its own mark thresholds: High Distinction starts at 80%, Distinction at 70%, Credit at 60% and Pass at 50%. The formula is the standard GPA = Σ(grade points × credit points) ÷ total credit points.

Because Monash's HD threshold is lower, scoring 80–84 earns a full 7.0 here where it would be a 6.0 elsewhere. Monash records both a GPA and a WAM; a GPA of 6.0+ is the usual benchmark for Honours Class I and competitive postgraduate programs.

Monash grade bands

GradeMark rangeGPA points
HD80–100 %7.0
D70–79 %6.0
C60–69 %5.0
P50–59 %4.0
N0–49 %0.0

Note the lower thresholds: Monash awards High Distinction from 80% (most universities use 85%). This means an 82% is an HD at Monash but a Distinction at most other universities — a real advantage near the boundary.

How Monash grades become a GPA

Monash starts its top band lower than some universities. A High Distinction is 80 or above, not 85. A Distinction is 70 to 79. A Credit is 60 to 69. A Pass is 50 to 59. These bands map to grade points on the 7-point scale.

Because the High Distinction band starts at 80, a Monash GPA is not always the same as a GPA from a university that uses 85. This matters when you compare offers or apply across universities. Always read the scale, not just the number.

This tool uses the Monash bands and gives your GPA and WAM. For a general scale, use the GPA calculator, or the WAM calculator for your mark average. The official grades are on the Monash website.

FAQ

Common questions

How does Monash calculate GPA?

Monash uses a 7.0 scale with HD = 7 (80–100%), D = 6 (70–79%), C = 5 (60–69%), P = 4 (50–59%) and N (fail) = 0. Each unit's points are multiplied by its credit points, summed, and divided by total credit points.

Why is Monash's HD threshold 80% and not 85%?

Monash simply sets its grade boundaries lower than most universities. A score of 80–84% is a High Distinction at Monash but only a Distinction at universities using the 85% threshold. It's worth knowing when you're hovering near a boundary, because that band difference can move your GPA by a full point.

What's a good GPA at Monash?

A GPA of 6.0+ (Distinction average) is strong and is generally the benchmark for Honours Class I and competitive postgraduate entry, including pathways like graduate Medicine. 5.0+ is a solid Credit average that clears most graduate-employer screening.

Does Monash use WAM as well as GPA?

Yes. Monash records both. Your transcript shows your percentage marks (your WAM) and the university also calculates a 7.0 GPA for external use. This calculator gives you both figures.

What happens to my Monash GPA if I fail a unit?

A fail (N grade, below 50%) is worth 0 GPA points, and the unit's credit points still count in the denominator, so a single fail drags your GPA down sharply. The same fail also lowers your WAM because its low mark is included.

How many credit points is a Monash unit?

Most Monash units are 6 credit points, and a standard full-time semester is 24 credit points (four units). Use the credit-point value shown for each unit on your record.

What mark is a High Distinction at Monash?

At Monash a High Distinction is 80 or above. A Distinction is 70 to 79, a Credit is 60 to 69, and a Pass is 50 to 59.

Why is a Monash GPA different from other universities?

Monash starts its High Distinction band at 80, not 85. So the same mark can sit in a higher band at Monash. Compare the scale, not just the GPA number.

What GPA is good at Monash?

A GPA around 6.0 or higher is strong and sits in the Distinction range. Many honours and graduate courses ask for a GPA near 5.5 or above.
