Quick answers

Which VCE subjects scale the highest?

Of the mainstream subjects in 2025: Specialist Mathematics (30→43), then Maths Methods (30→35), Chemistry (30→34) and English Language (30→33). Languages like Latin and Chinese scale even higher. Scaling reflects cohort strength, not difficulty.

Which scale down?

Large, broad-ability cohorts scale down slightly — English, Psychology, Legal Studies, General Mathematics and Business Management (each 30→27–28). They can still give a great ATAR if you score near the top.

Do high-scaling subjects guarantee a high ATAR?

No. Scaling only rewards performance. A strong study score in a moderate scaler beats a weak one in a top scaler — pick subjects you can excel in.

How VCE scaling works

Every VCE study score is scaled by VTAC so scores can be compared fairly across subjects with different cohorts. A subject scales up when its students are strong across all their other subjects. It scales down when the cohort is broader in ability. Your scaled study scores are combined into your aggregate, not your raw scores. This uses your best five, with the English adjustment. The aggregate is then ranked to produce your ATAR.

These tools estimate your scaled study score per subject from the official VTAC 2025 Scaling Report. To combine subjects into a full ATAR estimate, use the VIC VCE ATAR calculator. For the detail on our method, see the methodology page. Studying HSC in NSW instead? Use the HSC scaling calculators.

VCE scaling — common questions

Which VCE subjects scale the highest?

Specialist Mathematics scales up the most — its scaled scores can rise above 50 — followed by Mathematical Methods, Chemistry and English Language. A study score of 40 in Specialist Maths scales to around 51.

Which VCE subjects scale down?

English, Psychology, Legal Studies, General Mathematics and Business Management scale down slightly. They have very large, broad cohorts, so a study score of 30 scales to a little below 30. It's a small effect, not a reason to avoid them.

Do high-scaling subjects guarantee a high ATAR?

No. The scaling boost only helps if you score well. A high study score in a lower-scaling subject beats a modest one in Specialist Maths. Choose subjects you can excel in.

What's the difference between a study score and a scaled score?

Your study score (out of 50) ranks you within a subject. VTAC then scales it — up or down — so subjects compare fairly for the ATAR. The scaled score is what counts towards your aggregate. In strong subjects it's higher than the study score; in others it's lower.

Should I choose VCE subjects based on scaling?

Understand scaling, but don't let it drive everything. The subject you'll score highest in matters more than its scaling band. Use these calculators to see how your expected study scores scale, then decide on strength and interest too.

How do I use these VCE scaling calculators?

Choose your subject, enter your study score (0–50), and you'll see your estimated scaled score and the change. Everything runs in your browser — nothing is saved.
