The University of Sydney uses the WAM (Weighted Average Mark) as its measure of academic performance and does not issue a GPA. Your WAM is the credit-weighted average of your actual marks: WAM = Σ(mark × credit points) ÷ total credit points.

Some overseas institutions and employers ask for a GPA. So this calculator also shows an indicative 7-point GPA. It uses standard bands. Treat it as a rough guide only. USYD's official advice is that there is no USYD GPA, and you should ask the requesting organisation for their preferred conversion.

USYD grade bands

GradeMark rangeGPA points
HD85–100 %7.0
D75–84 %6.0
C65–74 %5.0
P50–64 %4.0
F0–49 %0.0

Important: the University of Sydney does not calculate or issue an official GPA. The GPA above is an indicative figure using standard bands. If an organisation asks a USYD student for a GPA, USYD advises contacting them for their own conversion formula.

Why Sydney uses a WAM, not a GPA

The University of Sydney does not issue an official GPA. It uses a WAM, the average of your marks weighted by credit points. So when a Sydney student is asked for a GPA, this tool gives the WAM plus an indicative GPA for forms that need one.

At Sydney, a High Distinction is 85 or above, a Distinction is 75 to 84, a Credit is 65 to 74 and a Pass is 50 to 64. Honours and many graduate courses quote a WAM cut-off, often around 75 for entry and higher for first-class honours.

For a WAM on its own, use the WAM calculator. For a general 7-point GPA, use the GPA calculator. The official grade bands are on the University of Sydney website.

FAQ

Common questions

Does the University of Sydney have a GPA?

No. USYD states explicitly that it does not use or issue a Grade Point Average — it uses the WAM (Weighted Average Mark). The GPA shown by any USYD calculator, including this one, is an unofficial indicative figure only.

What do I do if I'm asked for a USYD GPA?

USYD's own advice is to contact the organisation asking for the GPA. Ask them for their conversion formula. Then apply it to your marks. Don't rely on a generic conversion for formal applications — use the requester's method or a credential evaluator like WES.

How is the USYD WAM calculated?

USYD multiplies each unit's mark by its credit points, adds these together, and divides by the total credit points. Some senior units may be weighted more heavily under certain WAM rules. Check your faculty's rule. This calculator uses a straight credit-point weighting.

What WAM do I need for Honours at USYD?

It varies by faculty, but First Class Honours typically requires a WAM around 80, with lower classes at correspondingly lower WAMs. Always confirm the exact threshold with your school or faculty handbook.

What's a good WAM at USYD?

A WAM of 75+ is a Distinction average and is competitive for Honours and graduate entry. 65–74 is a Credit average. 85+ is a High Distinction average and is exceptional, putting you in contention for prizes and the University Medal.

Does USYD round my WAM?

USYD reports your WAM to a set number of decimal places. It does not usually round it up to the next whole number for eligibility. A WAM of 74.8 is not treated as 75 — which matters when thresholds are tight.

Does the University of Sydney have a GPA?

No, not an official one. Sydney uses a WAM, the credit-weighted average of your marks. This tool gives your WAM plus an indicative GPA for applications that ask for one.
