UNSW reports both a WAM and a GPA on the 7.0 scale. This calculator uses UNSW's grade bands — High Distinction 85+, Distinction 75–84, Credit 65–74, Pass 50–64 — and the formula GPA = Σ(grade points × credit points) ÷ total credit points.

At UNSW the WAM is the figure most often used for Honours, prizes and program progression, so this tool shows your WAM alongside your GPA. A standard UNSW course is 6 units of credit.

UNSW grade bands

GradeMark rangeGPA points
HD85–100 %7.0
D75–84 %6.0
C65–74 %5.0
P50–64 %4.0
F0–49 %0.0

UNSW uses the standard 85% High Distinction threshold. UNSW's primary academic measure is the WAM, but it also reports a GPA on the 7.0 scale on transcripts — both are shown above.

How UNSW grades become a GPA

UNSW marks each course out of 100 and gives a grade. A High Distinction is 85 or above. A Distinction is 75 to 84. A Credit is 65 to 74. A Pass is 50 to 64. These bands map to grade points on the 7-point scale.

UNSW leans on your WAM more than your GPA. A WAM is the average of your actual marks, weighted by units. Many honours and graduate programs quote a WAM cut-off, so it is worth tracking both numbers as you go.

This tool gives both your GPA and your WAM. For a general Australian GPA, use the GPA calculator. For the WAM on its own, try the WAM calculator. The official grade bands are on the UNSW website.

FAQ

Common questions

How does UNSW calculate GPA?

UNSW converts each course mark to grade points using its bands (HD 85+ = 7, D 75–84 = 6, CR 65–74 = 5, PS 50–64 = 4, fail = 0), multiplies by the course's units of credit, sums, and divides by total units of credit. UNSW reports this 7.0 GPA alongside your WAM.

Does UNSW use WAM or GPA?

Both appear on a UNSW transcript, but the WAM is UNSW's primary academic record and is what's used for Honours, scholarships and most internal decisions. The GPA is mainly provided for applications to institutions that use GPA. This calculator gives you both.

What's a good GPA at UNSW?

A GPA of 6.0 (Distinction average) is strong and meets typical Honours and postgraduate thresholds. UNSW Honours entry often references a minimum around 4.5+ for some programs, but competitive programs expect 6.0+. Check your faculty's specific requirement.

What is the UNSW pass mark?

A Pass at UNSW is 50%. Marks of 50–64 are a Pass (PS), 65–74 a Credit (CR), 75–84 a Distinction (DN) and 85+ a High Distinction (HD). Below 50 is a Fail.

How many units of credit is a UNSW course?

Most UNSW courses are worth 6 units of credit, and a standard full-time semester is 24 units of credit (four courses). Some courses and theses carry more — use the figure shown for each course on your transcript.

Why is my UNSW GPA different from my WAM?

Because they measure differently. Your GPA bands each mark (so 65 and 74 are both a Credit worth 5), while your WAM uses the exact mark. Two students with the same GPA can have different WAMs, and UNSW leans on the WAM for finer distinctions.

What mark is a High Distinction at UNSW?

A High Distinction at UNSW is 85 or above. A Distinction is 75 to 84, a Credit is 65 to 74, and a Pass is 50 to 64.

Does UNSW use GPA or WAM?

UNSW uses both, but leans on WAM. WAM is the mark-weighted average of your courses. Many honours and graduate places quote a WAM cut-off.

What WAM do I need for honours at UNSW?

It varies by faculty, but a WAM around 65 to 75 is common for entry, and higher for first-class honours. Always check your own program's rules.
