How to read your target

Your ATAR is a rank, not a mark. To reach a target ATAR, what matters is your aggregate — the sum of your best 10 units of scaled marks, out of 500. This tool turns your target ATAR back into the aggregate and the average scaled mark you need, then shows the raw HSC marks that get you there.

The key idea is scaling. The same raw mark is worth different scaled marks in different subjects. A raw 85 in a high-scaling subject like Physics is worth more than a raw 85 in a lower-scaling one. That is why the table shows a lower raw mark for high-scaling subjects — they do more of the work for you. Even so, it is smarter to pick subjects you can do well in than to chase scaling, because marks matter more than subject choice.

Use this with the rest of the site. To check a real estimate from your marks, use the state calculators like NSW or VIC. To see how one subject scales, try the scaling calculator. Already have scaled scores? The ATAR predictor turns them into an ATAR. For the official method, see UAC.

For example, to reach a 95 ATAR you need an average scaled mark near 41 out of 50. That works out to about a raw 84 in high-scaling subjects, but closer to a raw 90 or more in lower-scaling ones. It is worth aiming a little above your target to give yourself a buffer.

FAQ

Common questions

What marks do I need for a 99 ATAR?

To reach a 99 ATAR you need an aggregate around 450 out of 500 — an average scaled mark near 45 out of 50. In raw terms that is roughly a Band 6 (90+) across high-scaling subjects, and higher again in lower-scaling ones. Enter 99 above for your exact target.

What marks do I need for a 95 ATAR?

A 95 ATAR needs an aggregate near 410 out of 500, or an average scaled mark around 41. That is roughly a high Band 5 to Band 6 across strong subjects. Enter your target above to see the raw marks.

Is this target calculator accurate?

It uses UAC's official 2025 NSW HSC aggregate-to-ATAR relationship, so the aggregate and scaled-mark targets are sound. The raw-mark figures are indicative, because exact scaling differs by subject and year. Treat it as a planning guide.

Do these targets work for VIC, QLD and other states?

The ATAR is a national rank, so the targets are a useful guide everywhere. The raw-mark translation is calibrated on NSW HSC scaling, so VIC, QLD and other students should also check their own state calculator for a closer estimate.

Should I pick subjects just for scaling?

No. Marks matter more than subject choice. A strong mark in a subject you enjoy usually beats a weak mark in a high-scaling one you struggle with. Use scaling as a tie-breaker, not the main reason.
